The arrival of spring in Milan is announced by the fixed appointment of Floralia, the first “floral chic” event on the calendar. Colors and scents from all over Italy bloom in Piazza San Marco, which from piazza-jewel of Brera turns into a bouquet square.
For a whole weekend, the beautiful church square becomes a colorful outdoor market that hosts flowers otherwise impossible to admire in the center of Milan. In the center you will find a refreshment tent with delicious homemade and organic foods, with an inviting aroma. It doesn’t end here! You can access the premises adjacent to the basilica, to visit a multitude of stalls with delicious little dresses, straw hats, ceramics, linens, jewelery, vintage items and bric a brac.
Given the privileged location of the event, the occasion also becomes cultural. During Floralia, the Amici di Brera will present the two largest paintings in Milan by Crespi and Procaccini, which can be viewed through free guided tours at 3 pm, 4 pm and 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
Cut flowers and vegetable plants, from the best specialized nurseries of the peninsula, create a colorful mosaic in the central Brera district: hydrangeas, roses, dianthus, succulents and orchids blend with the architecture of the square, making this event unmissable for enthusiasts and those who complain about the absence of greenery in the streets of the capital.
To buy lavender this year you don’t have to go to Provence! Floralia offers for purchase essences and organic healing products, with the unmistakable scent reminiscent of the French countryside. In the churchyard, the inevitable food contest, with delicious prizes for everyone!
If you don’t feel like adopting a plant because you don’t have a green thumb, just look around and immerse yourself in nature and its colors. There is also a beneficial aspect: the proceeds of Floralia are donated to the ONLUS Solidarity Center of San Marco!
