I’m sure you’ve all psychologically prepared for the demanding weeks ahead on the horizon – with endless Christmas dinners, your sweet midweek meditation (ie. hibernation with Netflix and tea) is suspended until the New Year. But don’t despair! This weekend’s program will make sure you burn off all the panettone you’ve eaten and the liters of wine you’ve drunk.
Friday 16/12
Disco Rootz, a new format from the Wall, is now being held once a month with free admission. The project has one ambition, make you dance your butt off in a warm and friendly atmosphere. This week will hot an incredible artist, Borrowed Identity. Despite his age, this DJ has played in some of the world’s best clubs. His sets never get stale, blending techno and house ballerina.
If you love techno, you’re not going to want to miss Friday night at Dude with Rodhad and Magda. The latter began her career in 1998 by opening the Richie Hawtin tour, and then quickly becoming an important representative of the minimal techno scene, creating not only her record label but also a brand of tequila (which I now can’t wait to taste!). Rodhad meanwhile makes techno that makes you close your eyes and lets you be carried away by the music, detaching yourself from everything and becoming mesmerized by deep, repetitive rhythms. Since it launched in Berlin in 2009, DYSTOPIAN has come a long way. His sets have been touring all over Europe between Berghain in Berlin, in Trouw Amsterdam, to Concrete and Rex in Paris and Lux in Lisbon.
At Volt you can find the British duo that makes up Simian Mobile Disco. Their name immediately evokes 2008 at Gasoline, when “Hustle” and all of their remixeds were on heavy rotation. With their latest album, they have finally come back to concentrate on clubbing with slightly darker music than we were used to, but it’s all still just as addictive.
Saturday 17/12
The conventional times of festivals are beginning to change, and for those who don’t want to get home too late, you can now choose Vitamina. Doors open at 5pm and close at 3am. But early opening is not the only reason to visit Vitamina. The party is located in the middle of a park, and you get to immerse yourself in nature as you wind down a long lit path following the beat of music, to a villa set in a bamboo forest and fog. Inside you’ll find a fireplace, and Berlin Diego Krause playing his epic house/techno set.
Sunday 18/12
I confess I have several weak points and one of them is Floating Points. Formerly a neuroscientist, he became a DJ supporting Four Tet and Caribou. You might be able to guess what kind of music he makes. Being an artist of incredible talent, he produces a mix of jazz, classical, soul, broken beat, house and techno that few others can pull off. ‘I DJ therefore I am’ is the motto of Floating Point aka Sam Sheppard, who will play at Dude this Sunday. You definitely won’t regret having stayed at home in your slippers. Sunday is usually a day of rest, but maybe you might have to change that this weekend!
