Hotel Mulino Grande

A magical getaway and an oasis of well-being

Milan, Parco Agricolo Sud. A few hundred meters from the Visconti Castle of Cusago, is a little gem of a place that represents everything we love about getting out of town. I’m talking of course about the Hotel Mulino Grande.

Opened in 2010, following the restoration of an old 16th Century flour mill (which was originally used to supply service the adjacent village) this structure retains its character and foundations. Thanks to the work of architect, Antonella Tesei, the hotel structure mixes innovation, technology and tradition, doing so in a way that is novel and environmentally friendly.

Drive through the beautiful garden of Mulino Grande and enter the Hall and you will be arrive at a place of absolute serenity and relaxation grounded in neither time nor space. The walls, the old restored beams, the floor and the millstones have all been carried over from the original building, and are brought to the forefront with detailed lighting designs. It gives the rooms a magical atmosphere that is hard to forget, and impossible to find elsewhere.

It’s a beautiful walk through the common areas which have two splendid fireplaces and leads to the Lounge Bar of Mulino Grande – the perfect place for a drink or a Cuban Cigar during the cold winter months before the fire or you can enjoy the summer evening breeze under the pergola in the outdoor area when the weather permits.

We move on next to dinner at the Restaurant Magiono and savor traditional Lombardian dishes made with locally sourced, organic materials. Go out and take a walk in the garden and stop to watch the stone mill and the water flowing through it, and try to distill this special moment. Each of the hotel’s 21 rooms have been designed to revitalize your senses and offer an alternative to the frenetic pace of Milan.

There is a certain kind of luxury, waking up in a bucolic setting like this – even before you indulge in a treatment at the BioSpa which is equipped with features such as a sauna, Turkish bath, emotional shower, ice and relaxation area with herbal teas. There is a newfound pleasure in letting go and rediscovering the essence of your thoughts.

You return to the restaurant and have a kind of breakfast you might expect off a farmstead: fresh juice and freshly baked cakes. The smell of coffee fills the room. Meanwhile depending on your needs, the Mulino Grande hotel’s reception will have organized activities for the day: a ride in the rural farmhouse of the Parco Agricolo Sud, or a bus trip out to the best fashion districts.

The hotel boasts several meeting rooms and a functional space. The hotel is able to adapt the rooms to your meeting needs. Still, given we are on holiday and just want to enjoy the fully #ruralchic style of this fantastically designed hotel, we leave business (and stress) far, far behind.

We can't. That's why every week we share the best experiences
Milan has to offer.
