Since Pokeia was born (literally “chopped fish”), the dream of a trip to Hawaii seems much more realistic. This restaurant, located a stone’s throw from the Navigli, offers one of the typical Hawaiian recipes: the pokè. A base of rice or salad is enriched with raw marinated fish, fruits, vegetables, seaweed, seeds and sauces. The result is a dish – or better, a bowl – healthy, tasty and nutritious.
The Milan location is worthy of a Honolulu bar: the wallpaper portrays female figures in vintage swimsuits floating on avocado almost as if they were mermaids, swimming fish, sea waves and, the unmissable “hang loose”, a typical Hawaiian gesture. Between tables made of wood and colored chairs, tropical plants sprout together with two suspended swings contributing to the setting that inspires the place.
We tried the new menu, attracted by what it had to offer. For starters it offers the poke tacos, colorful and tasty, the rice paper roll or, as an alternative to fish, pulled pork. The first course culinary combinations are not lacking. The poke bowl is available in two sizes: normal and large. You can choose to rely on the skill of the chef Vincenzo Mignuolo ordering one of the five signature bowls or compose your own pokè with available ingredients.
Among the chef’s creations you will find the Molokai with black rice, tuna, marinated red onion, baby corn, bean sprouts, seasoned with mango sauce, walnuts, lime and honey. The Oahu with white rice, salmon, daikon, avocado, wakame seaweed, wasabi, almonds, or the Honolulu which takes its name from the capital of the islands. In addition to the five signature there is the pokè plus: white rice, pulled pork, coleslaw, mango, jalapeño, dried onion, or the Monthly, every different month, made exclusively with Italian raw materials. To give free reign to your creativity, compose your dish by choosing the ingredients you prefer, divided by type: base, protein, additions, sauces, crunches. The order will be a great excuse to exchange advice with friends and experiment with new combinations.
If the weather happens to be cold and you have the desire to eat something hot, the menu offers two velvets that owe their name to their color: Orange and Purple soup, respectively based on carrot and beet, combined with ingredients such as coconut milk or nori seaweed will once again take you out of Italy and the traditional flavors of our country.
The attention dedicated to the drinks is none the less. You can accompany your meal with a smoothie (Orange, Green or Red) or one of the cocktails with exotic names: Ohana, Makai Sour, Lei tonic made in collaboration with the bartenders of Mag Cafè (confirmed by the presence of the famous Negroni del Marinaio).
At this point you’re only missing dessert. The mango, coconut or vanilla mousse served on peanut crunch will not make you feel guilty… after all it is still fruit! Pokeia continues to distinguish itself in the city by its refined ingredients, never discounted and refinement of the ingredients used, never predictable and always fresh from the ocean. Hawaii has never been so close!
